When 5 Year Old's Fantasize About Independence

A couple weekends ago my hubby and I packed up the truck and kids and drove up to Lake Don Pedro for a weekend of camping fun! I love camping. I love being embraced by every aspect of nature, waking up with the sunrise, smelling like campfire for weeks afterward. I also love how relaxing it is to get away from the craziness of life... although camping with kids doesn't necessarily scream relaxing, am I right?
Anyway, my hubby needed to check out the camping grounds in preparation for the youth group's summer trip next month. The munchkins and I just decided to tag along for the moral support;). The drive was about 5-6 hours. Our kids are actually traveling champs since we've been dragging them all over the country since they were born. Other than the typical "How much longer; I'm hungry; I'm thirsty; I'm uncomfortable" comments from the peanut gallery, they were pretty awesome the whole drive. On our way home, my 5 year old daughter (Addalyn) made an interesting, random comment that just made me stop and think about what it was like to be little again... and it also made me laugh. Instead of taking way too much time to explain my daughter's personality, please refer to my post a few months ago Behind the Parenting: Raising a 5 year old daughter who wants to be a teenager. It will give you a better context for this story.

"Mommy, when I turn like 7, or maybe when I'm 8 or 9.... actually, when I'm 10 years old can you drop me off at Target by myself? How about you and daddy and Clayton can stay in the car and I can go into Target and get chips, candy and balloons. Just by myself. And then I'll come back out and you can pick me up."
This girl keeps me on my toes! Always thinking about the future and fantasizing about the day she can do life on her own, without adults telling her what to do or NOT do. Her level of independence freaks me out sometimes, but this little comment just had me stop and chuckle. In her mind right now, the mind of a 5 year old girl, her most perfect scenario of freedom as she gets older is going into Target by herself and getting to pick out her own chips, her own candy, and balloons.
First off, Target!!!!! She's totally my child. To all mamma's of young kids out there, lets face it... we all dream of taking a solo trip to Target. Chips and candy? HECK YES! The only thing I would have skipped are the balloons. But balloons just fit Addalyn's character. She brings the party with her everywhere she goes.
I pray to God that this little firecracker of a girl can keep her innocent mind as long as possible. I'm absolutely ok with visions of balloons and candy swirling her brain, but the solo trip to the store will just have to wait... My hand will not be ready to let go of hers in 5 years.
