And the total is....
As I woke up this glorious rainy Saturday morning, I was immediately filled with joy as I realized I didn't have to get ready for work! As the Other Half popped out of bed to go get the Munchkin (my daughter) out of her crib, I slowly sighed and snuggled back into my pillow waiting for the slobber queen. Weekends are great for so many reasons, but the biggest one I look forward to is spending it with Munchkin.
By the time we left the bedroom it was nearly 9:45 and I was hungry, and so was Munchkin, so I squeezed her chubby little thighs into her high chair and laid out a handful of cheerios for her. I was immediately let down as I realized my kitchen was devoid of food! Bah! I hate when that happens, and it happens a lot considering the Other Half and I both work full time and have a child. I rarely have time to clean, let alone go to the grocery store. And I HATE going to the grocery store! I'm always fighting in my head about what to buy and how much money to spend and whether or not I should stick to completely healthy or allow some treats to slide into the cart. (Those of you who are organized are probably shuttering at the thought of not going to the grocery store with a preplanned list and budget, but that's not how I roll). So it was inevitable... knowing that I had the day off and nothing planned I guess a grocery store visit was the new goal. This visit ended up being pretty awesome, though, which is why I'm posting this story, boring as it may be.
After a quick run and Munchkin's morning nap, I packed up the diaper bag and headed across the street to the store. Yes, the grocery store is just across the street which probably makes my hatred of going there all the more lame. As I started my journey the Other Half called me to ask how much I was going to spend. I quickly said, "oh just fifty dollars." Uuummm, I live in Southern California. In what make-believe world do I think I live in where fifty dollars gets me more than 3 items!! By the time I came to my senses, I was already in the store and off the phone. Then I thought, "what if I CAN keep it under fifty dollars and still come away with a decent shopping trip?" CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!
I quickly handed the Munchkin a bag of snacks to keep her occupied and I headed straight for the produce. Apples, bananas, (stop to pick up toddler shoe kicked off) carrots, cereal, (stop to pick up dropped bow) milk, eggs....I find it hard to keep a count of how much you're buying when you have a one year old to entertain at the same time. But I was so determined to get enough necessities and still stay under fifty dollars!
Forty minutes, five aisles and one toddler meltdown later I stepped into the checkout line. I began to sweat as the cashier started ringing up my items. Halfway through and already at thirty-seven dollars! What?! Oh wait... then I realized I forgot to slide my club card!!! As I slid it through, the cashier hit the 'ENTER' button like it was the panic button on his key chain looking for his car in a ginormous mall parking lot! .....And the total is...... $50.27!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have never been so excited in my entire life about groceries! I quickly called the Other Half to gloat about my success and I even took a picture of the cart full of food to commemorate the moment.
Yes, this was my Saturday and I was happy about it:) It's days like this that make me realize and appreciate how unpredictably low key my life has become! Needless to say, I stayed within budget, I restocked my kitchen, I hung out with the Munchkin and I succeeded at a self created challenge. What better way could a mom spend her Saturday?!
