The American Dream
Well, after four months of searching, two months of paperwork and one month of living I can finally say that we are officially homeowners! We have been for over a month and a half now, but I kept thinking some random person was going to show up at our house one day and be like, "Psych! Haha, you're not mature enough to own a house!" ... and then take our keys away from us like it was all some hilarious joke. I have to admit that it has been a roller coaster process, but it was so worth it!
Aside from the fact that I learned what all goes in to buying a house like the mounds of paperwork, signatures and phone calls that is required, I didn't realize how much of a growing process it was going to be. The history of your entire personal finances and work ethic basically get thrown on the table in front of you and become public property to everyone involved with the process. It can be super intimidating at times and I found myself constantly thinking, 'is this worth it?' I wish we could have gone back to the 1950's when buying a house was the American dream and almost anyone who had at least one family member with a steady job could somehow acquire one of their own. Nowadays people almost cringe when you mention loan, mortgage or credit! So I really had to take a step back and reevaluate my goals in life. Even the Other Half (my husband) seemed discouraged at times and I found myself wondering if we should push through the situation or stop and decide to back down and change courses. Then I would have a moment of intense flashbacks of all the craziness that comes with renting! Then I would have this uncontrollable motivation to push through so I never have to experience any of that again. So in honor of saying bye bye to renting and in hopes that I might encourage someone else to go ahead and make the decision to buy, I've decided to come up with a Top Ten Worst Things About Renting. IF anyone is sympathetic enough to read this post, feel free to add to the list. I find it therapeutic for those who have experienced it first hand.
10. Crazy roommates
9. Moving every time the lease is up
8. Crazy roommates leaving dried mac and cheese, and dirty dishes, on the stove for a week
7. Lifting heavy furniture up stairs because it's cheaper to live on the second floor
6. Crazy roommates moving out to stick you with the rent and the mounds of clothes and personal items they left behind in a hurry to move out without you finding out
5. Wanting to paint but then having to paint it back to the original color before move out
4. Trying to hide your cat that you never put on the paperwork so you wouldn't have to pay the pet fee
3. Filling in nail holes
2. Living too close to the entrance of the complex and hearing the gate/cars/yelling/stereos
And the # 1 worst thing about renting is.....
1. NOT getting any of your initial deposit back
So here's to the years ahead of fixing my own clogged drains and, in general, any mandatory house upkeep that can't just be overlooked for the next tenants to deal with.
